The Landscape of Bias in STEM

This session is intended for those interested in learning more about the landscape of bias in the context of STEM careers.

The purpose of this interactive session is to:

  • Explore the existing evidence on bias in the STEM context
  • Provide an overview of how bias can affect decision-making and day-to-day work
  • Explore case studies that illustrate how bias might intersect with various aspects of learning in STEM (e.g., assessment practices, group work, job applications, grant applications and more)
  • Suggest practical strategies for mitigating the impact of bias in the context of STEM

Dr. Fiona Rawle

Fiona Rawle (she/her) has a Ph.D in Pathology and Molecular Medicine and is the Associate Dean, Pedagogical Development and Scholarship, at the University of Toronto Mississauga, and a Professor, Teaching Stream, in the Dept. of Biology. Her research focuses on bias in STEM, science misinformation, the science of learning, and public communication of science. She has received numerous awards focused on teaching, including the 3M National Teaching Fellowship. Dr. Rawle is co-chair of the University of Toronto’s TIDE group (Toronto Initiative for Diversity & Excellence), through which she gives lectures and workshops on unconscious bias, equity, and diversity.
